Baby box is a facility made to prevent the death of babies who are abandoned in dangerous surroundings due to the reasons that they were born by single mothers or born with disabilities. It was started in 2009 in South Korea by Pastor Jong-Rak Lee of Jusarang Community Church. It is a humanitarian organization that takes in abandoned, often disabled, babies in and takes care of them with a group of staff and volunteers. According to Korea Times article that was published on February 27, 2019 (Baby Box is last resort to parents, newborns in Korea by Hae-Myung Jung), Pastor Lee received a desperate phone call at 3:20 a.m. in April 2007. It was from a mom who had abandoned her baby and to the pastors dismay, he found a cold, dead body of the baby outside in a box. The founder saw an article that Czech Republic has a baby box for discarded babies and immediately adopted the idea to establish the first of such place in South Korea. A baby box is a warm, comfortable box where a baby can be placed if any parent, by last resort, has decided to give up the baby due to extreme circumstances. The babies are then rescued and looked after until they are returned to proper government facilities or back to the babies biological family with financial support.
